  • Ampex ATR 102 For Sale

    Dear All,

This is email about selling a tape recorder. It has nothing to with selling tapes in this case. (Don’t worry those of you who have asked to hear the classical tape, another week and I’ll get them out. Very busy here right now.)

An associate of mine has an Ampex 102 custom for sale. There are three of these Ampexes in existence. He has one. I have one. And a third person has one.

They are the finest sounding Ampexs I have heard. I use my Ampex to record the majority of the copies I make for you. I was offered $12,000.00 for mine by someone local here in Chicago and refused it because I adore the deck. I also use it to make my special ½” copies for those of you have ½” decks.

These decks are custom gone through by a genius from Denmark who is the best tape technician I have seen in 55 years of doing this. They run and sound flawless.

My associate who is a mixing/mastering engineer works in the digital domain but thought he would need the Ampex to master to analog, but most if not all of his clients are into digital only.

So the deck is for sale. If I had the room I’d probably take another one. I thought I would not be able to fit mine into my new studio, but I did. But two would not fit.

Ampex decks like this by Mike Spitz sell for $15,000.00. And this one is better. I know that for a fact.

Price is $8500.00. Buyer pays shipping or can pick up here in Chicago.

If anyone is seriously interested please contact me and I can give more details.

In my opinion this is as fine a sounding deck as I’ve heard.

As a caveat, the deck is big and it is heavy as anyone knows who has seen an Ampex 102. And this one looks like any other Ampex 102 in good shape.

    Thank you.

    Jonathan

I recently heard a stock Ampex 102 at VPIs and the deck sounded so good wondered how it could get better!

Oh yes, Myles. Outboard tape head preamp would be a start and although there are others who don't agree but Studer A820 performs and sounds better to my ears.

these guys would beg to differ.. http://www.ataudioeng.com/atr-100/

Gamma from Manley is trying to sell a pair of ATR-102s, they have the Manley tube preamps. He wont part out the package, I asked b/c I wanted the repros. Kevin Kasiser at Vertigo supposedly went through the machines. I have Gamma's mobile number if anyone is interested. They're 1/2 inch, btw.

How much more money did the A820 cost than the Ampex ATR 102 when new?

                Myles,

Can we, european readers owning tape machines, know who is this tape technician?
My opinions rely on listening mainly to acoustical, non amplified music. I do not care about electronic music or listening to rock at stadium levels, but I enjoy Mahler and Shostakovitch.
