David, this system looks very nice. You refer to it as the Nearfield set up. Could you share the dimensions of the room and how far the listening seat is from the speakers? Also how do you define near field?

The room is surprisingly sparse. It looks as though there is no room treatment. Could you discuss why you do not think it is necessary?

Very nice quality with the photographs. Thank you for sharing this system.

Hi Rob, Yes, I am becoming increasingly horn-curious, but it is difficult to get much exposure to horns here in New England. I am more curious about the advantages of large speakers and rarely see them in what many might consider to be rooms that are too small to support them.

                      Hi Peter,
Room dimensions are about 13' x 18' and listening position is 6.5' from the drivers. There a few changes in that room since I shot the pics but not much in the way of acoustic treatment. There's very little one can do in a room this size by sticking stuff on the walls without making the already horrible acoustics worse, the key is speaker and seat position.

High high quality dispersion (not absorption) on some of the walls would work if you ever feel like it.

Hello David. Thank you. That makes sense as you are getting more of the direct sound and lessening the influence of reflections and less than ideal room acoustics.
I was just curious if he is JBL speakers need some distance for driver integration but it does not seem so. I also had a preconceived notion that such speakers needed large rooms with the large drivers.

I listened a couple times to Altec voice of the theater speakers at a friend’s house in the near field and cello sounded very discombobulated.

                        Hi Peter,

Of course there are advantages with a large acoustically sorted out room vs this small reflective space but if you know how to setup large speakers in small spaces you'll get a lot vs small speakers that are easily to setup in this type of space. JBL's are large room horn speakers and will sound discontinuous even in a large space if setup isn't optimized, I set them up in this crappy space to allow people see what's possible when you understand how things work, even a horn speaker that can beam this close.

VOTT is a different type of animal, for one you have to know the condition and can't go just by looks. The other issue is that these are theater speakers and designed for really large spaces so this isn't a closeup speaker by any other stretch of imagination but both speakers will sound discombobulated if not setup properly.
