  • Pelé: Birth of a Legend

I'm a HUGE football (soccer) fan and am so pleased to see a biopic on Pelé, who is for many the greatest player to ever don a pair of football cleats. Additionally, he personifies class and grace and is the world's most prominent and best ambassador of the sport. His story deserves to be told.

Not a soccer fan anymore but I was in my childhood and teenage years when Pelé was at the peak of his career. I was fortunate to seem him play several times and back then at my age he was nothing short of a football Super Hero. There have been other great players but none equalled Pelé and his Super Hero stature for me.

Agreed. Pele was in the twilight of his career when he came to the Cosmos but he along with Beckenbauer, Alberto, Chinaglia, Cruyff and Americans Davis, Messing and Roth really put soccer on the map in this country and inspired so many school children to pick up the game.

And look at the effect it had. The U.S.A. National team is now a formidable opponent at world class levels and American-born players are being drafted and playing for some of the top teams in Europe.

On a bit of a side note. My next personal favourite player was Johan Cruijff (alt. sp. CRUYFF) who recently passed away at the age of 69 from cancer. FIFA ranked him as the #2 "FIFA Player of the Century", ahead of #3 Franz Beckenauer, #4 Alfredo diStefano and #5 Diego Maradona. He was also voted #1 European Player of the Century.
