  • Ridiculous Movie Remakes

I just saw a commercial on TV for a "new" movie and I cant believe it. They have actually remade "Ben-Hur" again ! The 1959 version is a true classic and won like 15 Oscars, why on earth would they choose to redo that one? It was so good. Crazy. Whats next? A remake of "The Godfather"?

If I remember right a stunt man died in the chariot race and they left the footage in the movie.

this movie is a classic but at 1959 it is one of the older remakes what gets me is how soon some were remade

IIRC there is one movie that was remade and is either going to be remade again or is in the process of being remade again.

king kong was remade twice. Original was 1933, first remake was 1976, second remake was 2005.

I saw the Ben Hur trailer, too and it made me cringe. Unknown actors and CGI.

But some remakes have been good.

I thought the second King Kong with Jessica Lange was pretty good, the third so-so.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers - original classic 1956 and the pretty good remake in 1978.

As far as King Kong goes, I like the original best, then the 2005 version, then the 1976 version. The ape in the '76 version was lame.

Actually the 1959 Ben Hur is a remake of the 1926 original. Fabulous movie.

I forgot about that one. Obviously silent, ANY silent movie is ripe for remake in the sound era, no matter how good. Another good reason is much better special effects or color or widescreen format. But the 1959 Ben-Hur was in ultra wide screen, color, sound, and had great visual
          effects and sets. EPIC.

About the only movie remake that to me actually was better than the original was 'The Thing'

Some gave the remake of The Fly good marks but it put me to sleep.

The original Fly was a Vincent Price classic. But Cronenberg's remake was very good, especially the Jeff Goldblum effects.

I liked the original with James Arness (Matt Dillon) playing the Thing. And then there was The Blob with a young Steve McQueen. But I think my favorite of that era was The Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Well they remade PLANET OF THE APES, so I guess they will remake anything with Charlton Heston in it.

Trivia alert: Charlton Heston was in the remake as well, this time as an ape.

I was in third grade when the 1959 Ben Hur came to the theaters. It was advertised like mad in my Classics Illustrated comic books. I drooled over it but I don't think my parents took me to see t at the time,

Why remake it? I think Hollywood is out of ideas. Just saw Jason Bourne latest. There are virtually no lines for Mat Damon. Plenty of action but the same old story line from the previous films. Got us out of the apt for a couple of hours.

Going to see Jason Bourne on Friday afternoon, and despite the mostly indifferent and some negative reviews, I'm still looking forward to seeing it.

Don't look now here comes another. Seeing it is by Legendary pictures this suggests that this is a set up for yet another remake. King Kong vs Godzilla.

Surely this at least gets a podium finish as far as ridiculous remakes go.

I'm sure the action sequences in the new Ben Hur will be awesome but really, has there ever been an actor before or since Heston with that amount of epic biblical gravitas? To make things worse they not only have to live up to Heston, they have to live up to Stephen Boyd's Masala which I dare say might be even more difficult.

I've always liked Gore Vidal, in no small part because of his pretentiousness. He was a primary screenwriter for the 1959 version of Ben-Hur. I'm a Charlton Heston fan, but this is hilarious....

Maybe they can add more special effects to the longest chase scene in movie history! 😀

I usually don't see remakes for that reason. It is easier to make a list of flops than successes. The remake of Total Recall, one of my favorite movies, was absolutely awful.

OTOH there have been some good remakes such as Nosferatu, Ocean's Eleven, Scarface and War of the Worlds.
