There's beauty in all shapes and sizes and good to see there is a drive to finally bring that to the forefront. I'm sure young women everywhere are thankful!

Yep. There are no limits in the drive for political correctness in all facets of our lives. In the old days, you damn near had to be a model to be an airline stewardess. Now days you can't dare call them a stewardess. They are known as "flight attendants" and they have grandmas wearing moo-moos fetching your drinks. I'm waiting for transgender males to show up as waitresses at Hooters. That should be coming soon along with adams apples hanging off the poles at your local ta-ta bar. We live in interesting times.

Problem is the new airline aisles are so tiny, you need the old stewardesses! There's literally an inch clearance on either side of that cart when they wheel it down the aisle.

As one in the industry, when I talk on the inside, it's still health related. It's like diets. Too many people are just stuck on the idea of weight loss and lose track of the bigger issues. Like what is the food doing to other health markers, inflammation, hormones, etc. in our bodies. Moreso, it's not the present but what are the long term effects of being underweight? What are these clothes hangers going to be like when they are 40 or 50? It's not pretty. It's all about striking a balance.

From anorexia or other nutritional causes? Other than TV, I don't know that I have ever seen someone suffering from anorexia.

I always try and get an aisle seat so I can at least stick one leg out to gain some space. The problem with an aisle seat is you literally get the shit beat out of you from everyone coming down the aisle dragging all of their worldly possessions with them and smacking them into you as they pass. Airlines allow people to bring the most ridiculous crap onto a plane when they know it won't fit under the seat or in an overhead bin. I would be like "Ma'am, your kitchen table will not fit into the overhead bin so you are going to have to pay to have it boxed and lashed to a wooden pallet and hauled by a freight company."

Could they make air travel more miserable if they tried? You got that right about being battered! You are lucky you didn't fall asleep and find your leg severed!

I think there are lots of nutritional issues. Some people eat too much and don't get enough exercise (I fall into that category) while some people don't have access to healthy foods because of money issues. Looking at food choices on a micro level is another bag of worms. I have always said if you want to understand why somebody is really fat, follow them around for a day and watch everything they eat and drink and you will understand.
Why and how we eat is incredibly complex. It's not much different than love. If you could figure out relationships or eating habits, you'd be a billionaire!

These are women not suffering from anorexia just really serious dietary deficiencies. I know one person who had anorexia. It was really hard to watch. She eventually got better. She's one of the lucky ones.

I assume the dietary deficiencies are due to lack of money?

                          Yes.

Eating disorders are really frightening whether its bullemia, anorexia, bing eating and starving, etc.

Do you know that they estimate 2/3 of female athletes have an eating disorder? Especially if they participate in a sport where body "image" is important. Eating disorders are also no longer a female issue either. So basically any athlete who participates in a sport where body "image" (take wrestling or swimming for instance) is important is considered at risk for an eating disorder.

I was at a meeting a couple of years ago where a Professor of Nutrition from Norfolk University presented a study she was doing showing that this cohort of 19 year old female volleyball had the bone mineral density of 40 year olds. The real scary thing about it is that the BMD for women's bones should be peaking at that age. Remember that there's a period where women can make deposits to that "bank account": after that only "withdrawals." So if they aren't peaking, then by 40 they certainly run the risk of osteopenia, if not osteoporosis.

Another scary stat: at death, the weight of an anorexic's heart is 1/3 the weight of an ordinary, age and sex matched person.

Sadly I do all the time ranging from a variety of issues including even exercise anorexia. Anorexia and eating disorders are a very difficult disease to treat and we all know the sad story of Karen Carpenter.

And there's no question that it comes from the family. Like something said, very innocuous that sticks in the child's head. A while back, I helped one woman get her daughter into an eating disorder program and one thing she said was very interesting. Her daughters roommate said, "I don't understand what the problem is. Mommy looks like that too."
