Slightly stilted English, but this video seems to help explain all the buttons.

See what are all the buttons on the Nikon D5300 camera body and what they do.FOLLOW US ON TWITTER: http://bit.ly/10Glst1LIKE US ON FACEBOOK: http://on.fb.me/...

I find modern cameras have too many buttons. I prefer mine old fashioned - shutter speed, aperture dial and a focus ring (plus on a digital camera - ISO setting). You don't really need anything else.

Yes, YouTube is a great source of information. You should also check with your local camera store as some may have free or pay seminars available. What's great about seminars is hands on experience as well as some one-on-one training. I have been to some really good Nikon sponsored events.

this feature was a must so she can share and have the could save it it all safely. I think as I am down here with her till New Years I need to help her and have my ten year old know too to help when I leave.

                    Al,

Does she not use it because it's too big or too complicated? If the "too big" option you may have to start over. If it's the complicated option, just put it on automatic and start using. Generally not much more needed than that.

If you decide to start over because this is too big to carry around, look at the new Sony mirrorless camera. They range from reasonable to very expensive, especially if you get into the Zeiss glass.
Fairchild 750 in OMA slate plinth, Miyajima Kansui, AprilSound RIAA, EMIA step-up, Bent Audi TAP-X pre, Ayre C5x SACD, Innuos Zen Mini, CAD 1543 MK II DAC, AntiCable Level 1 loom. AprilSound 50 monoblocs, or Shiit Aegir or Museatax MTR-101 monoblocs.

Al - You tube is a nice resource but a reference book is handy too. When I bought a Nikon D7000 body a few years back I picked up David Busch's book on the D7000 at Barnes & Noble which has larger print, many more illustrations/pictures, and easier to understand (comparatively speaking) explanations. He's written such books for virtually every DSLR made.

That said, I do not go deep menu diving. Typically I use: Scene Mode which adjusts for outdoor, portrait, sports etc.; choosing Aperture or Shutter Speed mode; choosing Metering Mode, from exposure meeting from a fine point to a broad area.

The reasons I don't use the more advanced features it's easy to get lost or distracted by all the complexity of the advanced features. My first SLR (film) fifty years ago was entirely manual with no metering, used a hand held Sekonic light meter and still took fine pictures without any bells and whistles.

Basically what I'm saying is unless you are an advanced or professional photographer, initially stay way from the advanced functions. One other thing, the software for the camera is updatable. DO NOT be a beta tester as initial releases of updates can be buggy.

When you do this a lot, you pretty much only ever use manual settings - aperture, shutter speed.

Not sure which Nikon that is ? I've been shooting Nikons since the early F3HP days and own a few upper Digital SLR's. My biggest and most expensive mistake was buying my wife a full size digital SLR. I even sent her to a class at the JR College and she still kept using her little point and shoot. But this site does have some set up ideas that might help.
