To be honest, I want to keep all of these restaurants a secret. You have my favorite Sushi spot tucked away on Staten Island, my go-to café in Brooklyn, my fat-kid Friday place in Jersey City and a...

The pizza looks luscious Myles. Here's one of my faves. Still family owned by the same family. I haven't been there in at least 5 years but I remember some of the workers from the photos so I have no doubt it's as good as ever. They make hot Zabalgione at your table for desert. A triple espresso and its love. http://www.paulandjimmys.com/

This place can't be well hidden if its in youtube! I love lox and the best I can come up with at home is gravlax because it doesn't require any cold smoking. I have plenty of hot smoking experience with fish, I smoked 20 lbs of local yellowtail a few weeks ago and co-workers at the office fought over it. I had some ideas on a DIY cold-smoker when I found a few turnkey options on Amazon...TBC

Thanks Rob, only been to one--Es-a Bagel—and always thought it was over rated. Granted their bagels were huge; but that was about all they had going for them. The best bagel shop in the city, H&H, closed years ago and bagels here never been the same for me. In addition, H&H had the best Sourdough bagels.

As far as lox goes, it’s hard to beat Zabars on the UWS or Sables on the UES started by an ex-Zabar employee or Barney Greengrass.

Oh yes. Great story about one of a dying breed! The old Jewish men who really knew how to expertly slice lox thinly. Not the chunky, etc. slop that passes for sliced lox nowadays.
Legendary Jewish lox slicer Len Berk, 91, is back brandishing his 18-inch knife from behind the counter at Zabar's after a year-long absence due to the pandemic.

Essa Bagel was for many years before moving west our favorite bagel. That’s a long time ago but we have been enjoying them recently because of Gold belly shipping services. Expensive though it may be its worth the price. H&H at one time was fabulous but not for many decades now. Actually the best were the Spring Bakery in the Bronx when I was a kid and my grandmother shopped there when my parents and I visited. My wife and I recently watched a YouTube video with a review of three bagel shops, Essa Bagel being one. Essa Bagel came in second with Utopia Bagels winning the taste off. We ordered a dozen thru Gold Belly. In our opinion decent but no match for the flavor or gummy texture of Essa Bagel.
