Mikey Looks At The Progress in Record Cleaning Methodology
I am still humbled that people still refer back to this almost 30 year old article.
It was a lot of work.So much has changed in the world of record cleaning, especially with cavitation now available. Still this 15 year old column includes a great deal of useful information. However, much is wrong, especially the claim that all chemical residues used in most fluids are removed with vacuuming. My experience with the Kirmuss restoration system proved that for me-Ed. -
Mikey Goes Crazy
With new analog products.
New Wallytractor looks interesting. Using same idea for cartridge alignment as Marc Gomes of SAT...."Miyabi" in Japanese means "elegance." Fuuga means "elegance with flair." Nagao-san was friends with Miyabi designer Haruo Takeda; he was also Japan's exclusive Miyabi dealer. Nagao has also worked at Stax, Audio Craft, and other storied companies and was part of the team that created the Infinity Black Widow tonearm all those years ago.👍 3 -
Back To The Early Days Of High End Audio
A throwback to a period where many of us were so much younger and had more hair. (And a year before my first review appeared in TAS! 😊) There was an...Author's Note: It was January 1986. I flew from London to Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show, following which I drove to Santa Fe, NM with Stereophile's then-owner/publisher Larry Archibald to talk about my leaving British magazine Hi-Fi News & Record Review magazine to join Stereophile. After discussing my future role at the magazine, I flew to Chicago to discuss an alternative idea, starting my own audio magazine, with a potential investor.👍 3 -
Mikey’s 100 Albums Worth Owning
It goes on for two hours so listen in chunks. Here's 100 recommended all-analog LP reissues worth owning. The video runs two hours so unless you are masochistic, you might want to watch in shorter segments but covering 100 LPs took time! Plus there are the usual fun stories interspersed throughout. Okay, I got wrong the The Who's "Tommy"'s original issue date (I said November '68, was May '69) otherwise all of the information should be correct. Yes, too many superlatives, but that’s video! 1) Ellington Masterpieces (Analogue Productions) 2) Duke Ellington: The Feeling of Jazz (Deluxe ORG Music) )👍 1 -
John Atkinson Looks Back at A Half Century in Audio
From his keynote speech at Axpona....Photo: Corrina Jones When JD Events' Liz MiIler invited me to give the keynote speech at the 2018 AXPONA, in Chicago suburb Schaumburg, I was at first not sure what to talk about. But then I realized that not only was 2018 the 32nd anniversary of my joining Stereophile as editor and the 42nd anniversary of my joining Hi-Fi News & Record Review magazine as a lowly editorial assistant, it also marked 50 years since I bought my first audio system!👍 2 -

Fabulous Interview With Roy Dunann!!!
Done a decade and a half ago. The purity of Roy's recordings continue to improve the better one's system gets. Conrad delves into the simplicity of DuNann's...I don't remember the year, but I remember the moment when I first became intensely curious about Roy DuNann. It must have been about 1975, right after I moved to Seattle. I bought a Sonny Rollins LP called Way Out West, took it home, cued it up on my Thorens turntable, dropped the tonearm, and suddenly I was in a room with Rollins and Shelly Manne and Ray Brown. It was a shipping room with records stacked on shelves all around the musicians, but I wouldn't know that until many years later.👍 2 -
